Hydrotherapy

The therapeutic effects of hydrotherapy date back to the Romans in 339AD (although we’re fairly confident that dogs weren’t included at this point!).

Our large pool is heated to 28ºC which relaxes muscles and combined with non weight bearing exercise provides numerous benefits to the swimmer.

The benefits of hydrotherapy

Immediate/short term effects of hydrotherapy:

• Decreased pain perception
• Relaxation of muscle tension
• Decreased heart rate at rest
• Reduction of oedema
• Increased active range of motion
• Feeling of well being due to release of endorphins
• Reduction of frustration for dogs on cage rest

Long term effects of hydrotherapy:

• Increased range of joint motion
• Increased muscle strength
• Prevention of secondary complications
• Improved cardiovascular fitness
• Decreased pain and inflammation
• Potentially earlier return to normal function
• Slowing of progression of degenerative disease
• Improved quality of life – each session is a social event for your dog

Conditions that benefit from hydrotherapy:

• Hip or elbow dysplasia
• Cruciate ligament injuries (& post op recovery)
• Osteoarthritis
• CDRM (chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy)
• Orthopaedic conditions
• Recovery from trauma, fractures and neurological damage
• Spinal injuries
