Hydrotherapy | Four Paws
Physiotherapy can help a variety of problems including back pain, neck pain, arthritis, strains and sprains and post-operative rehabilitation.
Dogs can suffer with similar problems, which afflict humans, but they can’t tell us where their pain is or if they have injured themselves, and they are often clever at hiding their discomfort.
Physiotherapy can ease the pain of dogs with a range of problems including arthritis, sprains, strains, back pain, and performance problems as well as post-operative rehabilitation. Dogs with spinal and neurological problems can also benefit greatly from physiotherapy.
A variety of soft tissue techniques (e.g. massage), Joint techniques (e.g. mobilisations and stretches), and electrotherapy treatments (e.g. LASER, ultrasound, TENS) are incorporated into animal physiotherapy treatments as appropriate. Exercise rehabilitation is also a very important part of animal physiotherapy.
In accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act, Physiotherapy on horses and dogs must take place with the consent of the registered Veterinary Surgeon. You can download a Vet's Referral Form here for your vet to sign in order to initiate physiotherapy treatment.
Questioning about your pet's current condition, daily routine, exercise level, medical history, medication and behaviour. A full assessment of your dogs gait and ability to move around from one position to another, assessment of joint ROM and stability, full palpatory (feeling the soft tissues and joints) assessment to identify areas of heat, swelling, pain, tenderness and muscular tightness either as a result of primary injury, pathology or as a result of compensatory movements. A neurological assessment if appropriate.
A treatment plan and appropriate rehabilitation programme will be formulated with referral for hydrotherapy if appropriate and suitable home exercise programme advised. Treatments may include manipulation and mobilisation to joints and soft tissues, electrotherapies including U/S, LASER therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation and specific exercises to improve balance, strength and ROM.
